What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha or Manglik) occurs when Mars occupies certain houses in the birth chart — typically the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house in some traditions. It is primarily studied for marriage compatibility because Mars represents aggression and conflict.
Step 1: Generate Your Kundli
You need an accurate date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. Enter these into a Vedic kundli calculator to see Mars placement in the Lagna chart (D1).
Step 2: Check Mars House Placement
Note which house Mars occupies from the Ascendant (Lagna). If Mars is in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12, Mangal Dosha is present in the classical definition. Some astrologers also check from the Moon and Venus.
- Mars in 7th: strongest marriage impact in classical texts
- Mars in 8th: affects longevity and in-laws
- Mars in 1st: affects temperament and self
Step 3: Check Cancellation (Dosha Bhanga)
Mangal Dosha can be cancelled if Mars is exalted, in own sign, aspected by Jupiter, or if both partners are Manglik. Always verify cancellation rules with a qualified astrologer before making marriage decisions.
